Optimising GAIA: How do we meet the science challenge?

چکیده

GAIA has been approved to provide the data needed to quantify the formation and evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy, and its near neighbours. That requires study of all four key Galactic stellar populations: Bulge, Halo, Thick Disk, Thin Disk. The complex analysis methodologies required to model GAIA kinematic data are being developed, and in the interim applied to the relatively simple cases of the satellite dSph galaxies. These methodologies, illustrated here, show that we will be able to interpret the GAIA data. They also quantify what data GAIA must provide. It is very unlikely in the present design that GAIA will be able to provide either radial velocities or worthwhile photometry for study of two of the key science goals: the Galactic Bulge and the (inner) Galactic old disk. The implication is that the radial velocity spectrometer and the medium band photometer should be optimised for study of low density fields – suitable for their low spatial resolution – and the broad band photometry must be optimised for inner galaxy astrophysical studies.

Exhibiting pride in the profession: Making the case for continued professional development

S196 Nursing is a profession. Although the art and science has become more science than art due to advances in technology and regulatory requirements, the profession of nursing is among the most trusted in modern society. How do we continue to earn that trust and respect? One could argue that looking after our professional development through ongoing education and certification gives us the con...

Aiming Higher: Advancing Public Social Insurance for Long-term Care to Meet the Global Aging Challenge; Comment on “Financing Long-term Care: Lessons From Japan”

Globally, aging populations are driving the demand for long-term care (LTC) services for a growing number of older people with disabilities or chronic illnesses. A key challenge for policy-makers in all countries is to find a comprehensive solution to financing LTC services to make them widely accessible, affordable, and equitable for all in need. In this commentary, we...

ممانهای گرانشی خورشید

Gravitational multipole moments of the Sun are still poorly known. Theoretically, the difficulty is mainly due to the differential rotation for which the velocity rate varies both on the surface and with the depth. From an observational point of view, the multipole moments cannot be directly measured. However, recent progresses have been made proving the existence of a strong radial different...

The Manifestation Challenge: The Debate between McDowell and Wright

In this paper, we will discuss what is called “Manifestation Challenge” to semantic realism, which was originally developed by Michael Dummett and has been further refined by Crispin Wright. According to this challenge, semantic realism has to meet the requirement that knowledge of meaning must be publically manifested in linguistic behaviour. In this regard, we will introduce and evaluate John...

Utility and experimental testability of the Gaia hypothesis

Gaia theory describes the life-environment system of the Earth as stable and self-regulating. It has remained at the fringes of mainstream biological science owing to historical definition problems and its apparent incompatibility with individual-level natural selection. However, various bodies of ecological and evolutionary research suggest ways in which the biosphere might tend towards stabil...
